Microsoft Xbox 360
There has been very little activity on our part while we patiently waited for a true modchip solution for the Xbox 360. Needless to say, nothing eventuated and the few Xbox 360's that we did "hack" for the desperate customers worked great... until the Three Rings of Death struck.
About 20% of the units we firmware hacked have failed due to the Three Rings of Death. The remaining units are still working fine. The problem here is, and the reason why we stopped modding Xbox 360, that Microsoft will only repair a modded Xbox 360 if you pay for the service. However, if your machine has not been hacked then they will do it free of charge.
Every Xbox 360 on planet Earth has a 3 year warranty for the Three Rings of Death problem. So my suggestion to all of you X360 owners is, don't modify your console until the 3 years is up.
The Xbox 360 is the world's faultiest console in history.
I guess I'll keep playing my X360, un-modded for another year-and-a-bit before I let loose on it!
Microsoft Xbox
I love my Xbox ... it's main use now is as a media centre and data server within the household. If you are looking for the world's greatest home media centre, then an Xbox with a mod-chip with Xbox Media Center (XBMC) installed on it is the solution.
Sony PlayStation 2
I don't understand... this console was released in 1997 and it's still selling strong! It outsells the PlayStation 3, and rivals the Xbox 360 in sales! What's the story?
I guess Sony is smarter than Microsoft when it comes to marketing and understanding the consumer. This is how I interpret it...
- Microsoft believes that the game console market is like the operating system (OS) market. If they, Microsoft, discontinue an operating system then everyone in the whole wide world will upgrade to the newest and "flawed" operating system.
Ummm... in the OS world, we have little choice, so that strategy works pretty good.
In the console gaming world we have choices. The wide selection of new games generally appears on all gaming consoles.
Sony were smart enough to tap into the low end of the market (with the PS2) - very smart! There is no other console to compete with the low end. What's the best gift for a young child?... an inexpensive console.
Nintendo Wii
The choice of a new generation (sounds like a Pepsi-Cola advertisement).
Do some research if you don't believe me. The Nintendo Wii is the world's number one selling console at the moment and it is unlikely that any of the current competitors will catch up.
Nintendo Wii was officially released on 19 November, 2006. Since it's launch, 13.1 million units have been sold
Sony PlayStation 3 was officially released on 11 November, 2006. Since it's launch, 5.4 million units have been sold.
Microsoft Xbox 360 was officially released on November 22, 2005. Since it's launch, 12.7 million units have been sold.

A quick analysis shows that the Nintendo Wii, in just over 12 months, has outsold Xbox 360 which has been available for over 24 months.
